Rain coming? Check Raindar! Animated Doppler radar on Google Maps for the US. Now also on Google TV and tablet!

Going somewhere and you're not sure if you need to bring your umbrella? Want to check if there's going to be fresh powder snow on the slopes in Tahoe tomorrow? Check Raindar! Raindar displays animated Doppler radar images on your Google Map. When you start Raindar it automatically focuses on your location so you can quickly see if there is precipitation coming your way. When pressing the search button on your phone you can now also search for locations within the US!

Raindar works out of the box but has many configuration options (see the recent changes page).

- green/yellow/red is rain
- blue/white is snow

Raindar can now also display storm tracks! It displays different icons for each of the 4 types of storms:

- Yellow circle: thunderstorm
- Yellow square: Hail Storm
- Yellow diamond: Rotating Thunderstorm (Mesocyclone)
- Magenta triangle: Tornado Vortex Signature (pretty heavy!)

When clicking on one of those icons a dialog will appear with detailed information.
The storm tracks also display the direction and speed of the storm in the form of an arc. The arc is split in 3 parts: 20, 40 and 60 minutes until the storm reaches that area.

On Google TV:
- Use the D-pad for navigate up/down/left/right
- Use the media forward/back or next/previous buttons to zoom in and out

Actually 5-star, but... ...I really would like to mark a number of locations for fast lookups, not just mine. I've got kids and other family all over the map. Still, this is an essentially perfect app. It does exactly what it promises. (Samsung GS3)

I did love it, but... ****** Old review... I'm an amateur weather nerd, and this app allows me to track storm cells. You can click on each cell and get even more info. Great free app, keep up the good work. Galaxy nexus ****** update. For a while now it will restart my phone as soon as I tap the icon to load the app. Dunno what that is about but it's not good. Samsung Galaxy Nexus, JB 4.2.1

Used to work great The compass feature is gone after this last update. Stopping to look for landmarks to get my bearings and orient the map is a pointless hassle since the compass was close enough even in the midst of fog. Now I have to open a separate compass app or search the horizon and hope I can figure it out. I am using a DROID RAZR maxx.

Great for motorcycling Use this ap the most. Helps let me know what type of weather I am heading into. Perfect for getting around thunderstorms etc

Superior App This app is far more superior then any of your trash local Doppler app. The radar covers the entire nation. Incredible!

Absolutely Perfect I have had this app for several years. It is unquestionably the best app of its kind. Reliable and accurate, and an excellent interface. Highly recommended.

Best radar app Number one radar app. Loads fast and is easy to use. Those that talk about force closes. Most likely is your phone. Clear the app cache. Could solve your problem. Thanks again

Great work app It allows me to see the rain coming and in which direction it is headed in live action without all the hype. I can shut down jobs before it is too late. LOVE IT

Radar without the fluff. I really love having a quick load radar app. Other apps have tons of clunky extras, links to forecasts, and way too many adds, but this app is slick and works great. The only add on I would suggest is a key for weather types. I live on a fluctuating temperature belt and I can't quite tell if it's slush, ice, freezing rain, or even hail. Otherwise it works great!

Stopped working on Note 3. NO LONGER WORKS! Uninstalled and re installed with no luck. This isn't going to give you your weekly forecast but if you want to see if those dark clouds on the horizon are bringing rain this is your app. Only complaint, could you move the compass to the upper right it is blocking the time stamp for me. Also watch/warning boxes would be nice.

Great app! Best radar application out there. Wonderful job with the zoom and the options are great.

Definitely recommend Don't leave home without type of app. Does exactly what it claims. No bugs and light as a feather on resources.

Greg Lopez at Nov. 25, 2014

Great app Very detailed and no annoying pop-up ads for me so far. Very good accurate radars. HTC ONE

Galaxy Epic Love the simplicity, but jus doesn't work on my phone. Worked okay when initially installed in NY state, came home to Mich & after reinstalling twice, it still crashes often (first it thinks I'm in Tulsa (never been there), then moves to my city & shuts down or it crashes when I try to zoom in once I'm in the correct city).

One of the best free Radar apps Ive had this app on my droid bionic for the last three years and i cant find one complaint. Its simple loads great and pulls its radar data from wunderground.

A Google User at Feb. 28, 2015

Fast, clean, better than similar apps Perfect, very simple, loads fast and shows local radar with one click. Very helpful during recent camping trip. Thank you! Works great on Samsung Galaxy S3, S4, S5

Mark Stevens at Oct. 8, 2013

Near perfect Fast, accuarate, granular, simple. Marks your GPS position instantly. Initial lad of the radar can be a bit slow, and seems to be getting slower.

Bill McCarthy at Aug. 15, 2014

The best! Im in tv news. I need fast reliable radar data when tracking storms. This app is hands down the best!

Betty Bray at Feb. 25, 2014

Go To App for BAD Weather!!! I've had RAINDAR for both smartphone and tablet for a couple of years. IF you live in ANY kind of bad weather alley, this is the gold standard! When local radars have shown a bad storm, RAINDAR has been right. Scaling In ND OUT KEEPS THE RESOLUTION. i RECENTLY, LIKE THIS WEEK BOUGHT AN IPad.. THIS app is my GOLD standard and none so far have measured up! Living in a rural area, RAINDAR is especially invaluable! It is clearer than anything I've seen, ever!

Andrew Small at Dec. 22, 2014

Fast, useful radar app No matter what weather forecast app I use, I always have this app installed alongside it due to the speed at which I can get the radar image. The only downside is the use of old Google Maps APIs, so zooming and panning is a bit clunky. Otherwise, it works and looks great, even on Lollipop!
